Rattle His Bones” by Annabel Hackney, Harry Mottram & John Bailey is a period piece about the Axbridge Union Workhouse, in Victorian times.

As soon as you mention the Axbridge Workhouse to someone it conjures up images of something out of Charles Dickens. From what the writers understand, the workhouse in Axbridge was not the harsh regime that some critics of the Victorian attitude to the poor would have you believe. We have tried to reflect more of a balanced view of the institution – without resorting to sugary sentimentality, political correctness or black gloom....

Notes from the Director: This is a test for the community theatre group in Axbridge. Not only as a piece of drama – making the play work in a slick & well rehearsed way – but as a credible representation of the community's past.

These performances were dedicated to the memory of Tony Welch who died during the rehearsals.
